Anténor Firmin died on 19 September 1911, in exile on St. Thomas. He was born 18 October 1850. A barrister, a philosopher and an anthropologist, he answered Gobineau’s Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races with De l’égalité des races humaines in 1885 — a book Europe ignored for a hundred years. He ran for the presidency in 1902, lost, and never saw Haiti again.
