A rising at Gonaïves proclaims the Republic and brings down the empire
Haitian
On 22 December 1858 a rebellion broke out at Gonaïves under General Fabre Geffrard and proclaimed the Republic against Faustin Soulouque’s empire. Faustin marched on Gonaïves himself with some three thousand men but halted at the gates; dysentery and desertion turned him back to the capital. The insurgents reached Port-au-Prince on 15 January 1859 and he abdicated. The imperial constitution of 1849 was abrogated and the charter of 1846 restored.
