A referendum hands Duvalier the right to name his own successor

On 22 July 1985 Haiti held a constitutional referendum amending the 1983 constitution. It created a post of prime minister and gave the president-for-life the right to designate his successor. The result was reported as approval by well over 99 per cent of voters. It was organised under the interior minister Roger Lafontant. The regime fell nineteen months later.
