2017 (Legacy): The authors define an “archipelagic view” as a necessary shift in Caribbean archaeological theory. Historically, many researchers generalized the history of the entire region based on excavations at only a few sites. This practice led to the entire Caribbean being viewed through the lens of the “Classic Taíno” culture of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. A true archipelagic view accounts for the unique environmental and cultural diversity found across different islands. By acknowledging regional lacunae, modern scholars aim to document the unique histories of every island community.
