1875-January-15: The departure of Spencer St. John, the British Minister to Haiti, to a new post in Peru marked the end of an era. St. John had been the principal and most effective opponent of American influence on the island for over a decade, often orchestrating European resistance to U.S. naval and territorial designs. His exit, combined with the successful implementation of the Haitian-Dominican Treaty, suggested that Haiti had finally secured a measure of regional stability and territorial integrity against its “Rival in Imperialism.”
