1849-1850: Benjamin Green was sent on a special mission to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. His instructions were to observe the state of the conflict between the two nations and to evaluate the potential for American influence. Logan notes that Green’s later interest in the Dominican Republic helped set the stage for the mid-century American obsession with obtaining a protectorate or naval base on the eastern end of the island.
