1822: Denmark Vesey organized a massive conspiracy of slaves and free blacks in Charleston, using the example of Haiti to inspire his followers. Having lived in Saint-Domingue as a youth, Vesey maintained that the Haitians would come to the aid of the Charleston rebels if they struck the initial blow for freedom. His lieutenants frequently read passages from newspapers regarding Haitian affairs to recruit and embolden co-conspirators. The plot allegedly involved secret correspondence with the black republic carried out through black cooks on trading vessels. This conspiracy stands as one of the most significant examples of the Haitian Revolution’s influence on North American resistance movements.
