1822–1837: Names and linguistic identifications of liberated Africans from vessels captured by British patrols have survived for several hundred individuals embarked in Cameroon. These records indicate a remarkable degree of geographic concentration for the captives funneled through this region. Most of the enslaved individuals were identified as originating from the small Cameroon Highlands area. These surviving profiles allow modern researchers to map the specific interior origins and cultural identities of those caught in the nineteenth-century illegal trade.
