1812 (The Patriotism of the Women of St. Marc): During the military operations at St. Marc, the local women were singled out for their “patriotism and ardent devotion” to the national cause. They were compared to “ancient Spartans” as they watched the combat from the top of the ramparts and were the first to shout the “cry of victory.” Beyond their moral support, these women provided “generous cares” and medical alleviation to the suffering and wounded soldiers of the government army. Their conduct was cited as a prime example of the unified spirit of the Haytian people in their defense against internal rebellion. This inclusion in the Haytian Papers served to illustrate the “ameliorated” social character and the high sense of duty present among all classes of Haytian society.
