1812 (Battle of St. Marc and the Defeat of Rebels): The Haytian Papers describe a significant military engagement where the “rebel army” suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the President’s horse guards. During this battle, the fields were “covered with dead bodies,” and the government forces successfully captured the enemy’s chests and military colours. The fugitives of the rebel force were depicted as wandering in the woods, “perishing of hunger and of thirst,” while cursing the traitors who had led them to such a miserable fate. This victory was attributed to the “brilliant valour” of several specific battalions that had performed fatiguing marches of thirty-six leagues without resting. The defeat of the rebels on this day was seen as a major step in consolidating Christophe’s authority over the southern districts.
