1811, March 28 (Elevation to the Throne): On the 28th of March, 1811, a law was passed by the Council of State that established the hereditary monarchy and elevated Henry Christophe to the dignity of King. The council argued that a people who had successfully defended their independence required a “majestic and imposing” form of government to ensure permanent stability. This constitutional change transformed the Presidency into a Kingdom, granting Henry the title of “Henry I.” The act was described as a response to the “general wish of the army and the people” who desired a stable executive power. This transition represented the final consolidation of Christophe’s authority into a formal sovereign state.
