1811, April (Creation of the Nobility): Following the establishment of the monarchy, the King created a titled nobility to serve as the pillars of the throne and the defenders of the state. This new hierarchy included princes, dukes, counts, barons, and knights, all of whom were chosen from the most distinguished military and civil officers. The Haytian Papers note that these titles were not merely honorary but were linked to specific responsibilities and the “splendour of the crown.” The King intended for this institution to inspire “noble emulation” among the citizens and to reward long-standing service to the nation. This move was framed as an “enlightened system” designed to mirror the social structures of established European powers.
