1807: The Gazette officielle de l’état de Hayti commemorated the British abolition of the slave trade by publishing a serialized account of the entire struggle. The Haitian newspaper highlighted the work of William Wilberforce and other prominent abolitionists to its local readership. This coverage demonstrated that the new black nation remained deeply engaged with international movements for human rights and universal liberty. By celebrating the end of the British trade, the Haitian government positioned itself as a legitimate participant in the “civilized” discourse of the Atlantic. The serialization also reinforced the link between the Haitian Revolution and the broader global campaign against slavery.
