1807-Mar.-25: The British Parliament passed the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, marking a monumental shift in the history of the Atlantic world. This legislation made it illegal for any British subject or vessel to participate in the trafficking of enslaved Africans across the ocean. The law was the culmination of decades of tireless campaigning by abolitionists like Thomas Clarkson and William Wilberforce, as well as persistent resistance from enslaved people themselves. Following the act, the British Royal Navy was tasked with enforcing the ban, initiating a century-long effort to suppress the global trade.
