1794-May: Spanish authorities in Fort Dauphin arrested 110 individuals described as “rabid republicans” and shipped them to Havana as political prisoners. This group included a majority of black and brown activists who had celebrated the ideas of liberty and resisted the counter-revolutionary Spanish presence. Among the most prominent detainees were the Flores brothers, who had vowed to oust the Spanish and re-establish the French Republic. By removing these ideological leaders, Governor Las Casas hoped to quarantine their radical maxims and prevent them from spreading across Cuba. These prisoners represented a direct threat to the stability of the Spanish slave regime due to their commitment to egalitarian principles.
