1793-Summer: George Theodorus “Dorus” Eskirkin and John Sims, two musicians who had deserted the British military, successfully eluded authorities by adopting maritime disguises. Aided by a black fiddler named Jack Nailor, they were often seen in the Jew market and eventually came to “look as brown as some people of colour.” Their ability to disappear into the multiracial urban underground reflected the profound difficulties officials faced in disentangling subversive networks. The success of their adventure highlighted the power of mobility and popular resistance in the era of social revolution.
