1793: Despite being a war year, nearly 350 foreign vessels successfully eluded privateers to land at Jamaica. Jamaican newspapers recorded these daily arrivals but often withheld specifics to protect the vessels from reprisals in their home territories. Such clandestine trade activity was often considered illegal in the ships’ ports of origin but remained vital for Caribbean survival. This continued maritime activity ensured that news of the Haitian Revolution continued to reach British territories.
