1792: Governor Williamson of Jamaica reported that the “spirit of discontent” among the enslaved population usually first appeared on the island’s north coast. This region was particularly vulnerable due to its proximity to foreign colonies and its numerous creeks that facilitated smuggling. The north coast was also influenced by the nearby “cockpit country” and established maroon towns. These geographical factors allowed for the rapid transmission of news and a higher degree of mobility for dissidents.
