1791-Spring: In response to the Ogé incident, the audiencia in Santo Domingo held marathon meetings to address the threat of “innumerable mulattos” entering Spanish territory. Officials feared that discontented individuals of the “same condition and mode of thinking as Ogé” would destabilize the colony. Troops were immediately dispatched to guard the fluid border, and reinforcements were later imported from Spain and Puerto Rico. These measures aimed to form a “Cordon” to prevent any communication between the two halves of the island. This militarization of the border reflects the colonial attempt to sever the “common wind” that linked the destinies of the oppressed across the archipelago.
