1790-Nov.: After their abortive rebellion, Vincent Ogé and fifteen lieutenants sought protection across the border in Spanish Santo Domingo. The Spanish authorities, no longer viewing their territory as a sanctuary for those fleeing French disorder, arrested the group under heavy guard. After ensuring the rebels harbored no hostile intent toward Spain, the Spanish governor turned them over to French authorities for trial. This act of betrayal illustrated the prioritization of imperial stability over the rights of colonial subjects. The incident shattered the traditional perception of the Spanish border as a reliable refuge for dissidents seeking freedom from French tyranny.
