1790-Dec.: An enslaved fisherman named Adam, known for being a preacher and a smatterer in religious topics, attempted to escape Jamaica. After embracing the Baptist faith, he was frequently observed preaching and praying among the slave community. He eventually boarded a merchantman gathering an outward cargo with the intent to sail out once the vessel was loaded. His owner interpreted this move as an attempt to broaden his ministry as a “fisher of men” beyond the island. This case illustrates how religious awakenings encouraged slaves to seek the wider world represented by maritime travel.
