1789-Jun.: By June of 1789, the colonial deputies representing Saint-Domingue planters sided with the Third Estate in its struggle against the Crown. While they embraced the disruption of traditional authority, they specifically refused to endorse the Declaration of the Rights of Man. These representatives quickly organized to ensure that the social forces of the Revolution were kept out of the colonies. Through the influential Club Massiac, they demanded that the Assembly leave colonial social and economic policy to the local elite. This strategy allowed the planters to support revolutionary change at home while maintaining absolute control over the enslaved population.
