1780: Insurrection aboard the Vigilantie, bound for Suriname (voyage 11076)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Suriname in 1780, the people aboard the Vigilantie rose against the crew. They had been taken at Sierra Leone estuary.

The record gives the numbers as: 309 people were embarked; 267 were landed.

Captain: Boswijk, Claas. Flag: Netherlands. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured by British – after disembarkation.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
