1777: Insurrection aboard the Thames, bound for Montego Bay (voyage 77218)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Montego Bay in 1777, the people aboard the Thames rose against the crew. They had been taken at Accra.

The record gives the numbers as: 279 people were embarked; 240 were landed; 39 died on the crossing.

Captain: Clarke, Peleg. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
