1776–1830: The average duration of the Middle Passage began to decrease in the late eighteenth century, representing a significant shift in maritime efficiency. This decline occurred even as the route from Southeast Africa, which was among the longest in the trade, grew in commercial importance. Technological improvements in vessel design and navigation likely contributed to these faster crossing times. However, faster voyages did not always translate to better conditions for the captives being transported across the Atlantic.
