1774: Insurrection aboard the Hermina Elisabeth, bound for Suriname (voyage 10669)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Suriname in 1774, the people aboard the Hermina Elisabeth rose against the crew. They had been taken at Windward + Ivory + Gold + Benin.

The record gives the numbers as: 120 people were embarked; 109 were landed.

Captain: Dupont, D. Flag: Netherlands. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
