1774: Insurrection aboard the Aimable Claire, bound for Martinique (voyage 30994)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Martinique in 1774, the people aboard the Aimable Claire rose against the crew. They had been taken at a port the record does not name.

The record gives the numbers as: 250 people were embarked; 209 were landed.

Captain: Butler, Thomas. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “laid up (disarmed) or broken up in the Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
