1772: Insurrection aboard the Comte d’Estaing (voyage 33912)

African

On a slaving voyage in 1772, the people aboard the Comte d’Estaing rose against the crew. They had been taken at Gambia.

The record gives the numbers as: 33 people were embarked; 33 were landed.

Captain: Ollivier, Jean-Jacques. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “destroyed, lost or sold as result of slave rebellion.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
