1769: Shore attack on the boats of the Andrews, bound for Saint John (voyage 17688)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Saint John in 1769, the Andrews had its boats attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Calabar.

The record gives the numbers as: 352 people were embarked; 287 were landed.

Captain: Robe, Archibald. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
