1769: Insurrection aboard the Concorde, bound for Freetown (voyage 30895)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Freetown in 1769, the people aboard the Concorde rose against the crew. They had been taken at Sierra Leone estuary.

The record gives the numbers as: 70 people were embarked; 70 were landed.

Captain: Carré. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “cut off by Africans from shore, ship did not reach the Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
