1769: Attack from shore on the Latham, bound for Dominica (voyage 91293)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Dominica in 1769, the Latham was attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Calabar.

The record gives the numbers as: 245 people were embarked; 200 were landed.

Captain: Colley, George. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “cut off by Africans from shore. Recaptured and landed slaves in Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
