1767-Jan.-28: Freight rates in the major ports of Saint-Domingue remained a critical economic metric for the export of plantation products. In Port-au-Prince, the cost for shipping sugar was fixed at 12 deniers, while cotton transport to France was recorded at 30 deniers. In Cap-Français, indigo transport costs ranged from 20 to 24 deniers, with special rates of 36 deniers for shipments destined for Le Havre. These standardized prices provided the necessary transparency for the colony’s merchants to calculate their operational margins.
