1767-Jan.-28: A substantial indigo plantation located at Pendu in the Gros-Morne district was offered for sale by M. de la Chauffée. The estate spanned 112 carreaux of land and included a main house, kitchens, slave quarters, and four distinct indigo factories. Two of these factories were powered by water, while the other two utilized horse-driven mills for processing the crops. The complexity of this industrial setup underscores the significant capital investment required for large-scale indigo production in the colony’s Northern Province.
