1767-Jan.-07: In the northern district of Fort-Dauphin, two individuals were specifically identified in the colonial runaway list to facilitate their capture. Jacques, a man of the Congo nation, was reported to have fled from the estate of the late Mr. Mageau, a former tailor in the town. Another fugitive, a young mulatto named Louis, was identified by the brand “DEGEN” on his right breast. Louis was claimed as property by Mr. Dumas, a high-ranking officer in the Quercy Regiment stationed in the colony. These notices provide a window into the varied ethnic origins and the specific branding marks used to track human property in Saint-Domingue.
