1767-Jan.-07: Dutch diplomacy focused on securing its maritime trade routes through new treaties of friendship and commerce with North African powers. Following the renewal of agreements with the Regency of Algiers, the Republic moved to finalize a similar pact with the Emperor of Morocco. A Moroccan ambassador arrived in Amsterdam with orders to put the finishing touches on this strategic alliance. The Dutch government recognized that while these African powers provided little direct material gain, their cooperation was essential for the freedom of Mediterranean navigation.
