1767-Jan.-07: Extensive renovations were carried out at the Palace of Versailles to repair and enhance the royal residence while the court stayed at Compiegne. A heavy dome that had previously burdened the chapel’s vault was replaced with lighter, more architecturally suitable ornaments. The palace gardens were meticulously restored, with marble and bronze statues cleaned and the large water basins completely rebuilt. Additionally, a magnificent new theater hall was completed, providing the magnificent castle with a grand venue for public spectacle that had previously been missing.
