1767: Insurrection aboard the Saint Jean de Luz (voyage 99011)

African

On a slaving voyage in 1767, the people aboard the Saint Jean de Luz rose against the crew. They had been taken at Senegambia and offshore Atlantic.

The record gives the numbers as: 169 people were embarked.

Captain: Lamarque, Martin. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “shipwrecked or destroyed, after embarkation of slaves or during slaving.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
