1767-Feb.-16: Sieur Chartier announced the discovery of a chemical composition capable of protecting iron from rust and atmospheric decay. He characterized rust as a “leprosy” that devoured the most useful of metals, essential for ships, carriages, and weaponry. The invention promised to significantly extend the longevity of metallic equipment used in both the metropole and the harsh Caribbean environment. Industrial advancements like this were publicized to encourage technological modernization within the colony’s infrastructure.
