1767-Feb.-14: A variety of specialized health products and proprietary medicines were advertised for sale at reduced prices in the colonial capital. These included marshmallow paste of the same quality found in France, “pearl vinegar” for women’s use, and English taffeta for treating wounds. Additionally, M. David, a Parisian dentist, offered specialized topical remedies and powders intended to radically cure toothaches. The availability of such metropolitan luxury and medicinal goods reflects the sophisticated urban consumer culture that had developed in Saint-Domingue.
