1767-Feb.-14: A three-year lease for a plantation belonging to Sr. Courcelle, located in the Mornes du Cap near La Providence, was put up for public auction. The estate featured a large main house, six slave huts, and 18 carreaux of land suitable for planting manioc and millet. Included in the lease were seven enslaved individuals who formed the core of the estate’s labor force. Such lease-to-farm arrangements allowed owners to maintain their land’s productivity while seeking alternative residences or returning to France.
