1766: Shore attack on the boats of the Standvastigheid, bound for Suriname (voyage 11009)
African
On a slaving voyage that ended at Suriname in 1766, the Standvastigheid had its boats attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Cape Lahou.
The record gives the numbers as: 281 people were embarked; 153 were landed; 128 died on the crossing.
Captain: Obbe, Sijbrand. Flag: Netherlands. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”
Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
