1762 June 13 : A carpenter from Saint-Domingue achieved a rare legal victory by successfully suing for his and his family’s freedom in the New York vice-admiralty court. This case illustrated that black visitors from the Caribbean occasionally chose to remain and establish new lives on the North American continent. Such legal maneuvers occurred within a broader context of expanding commercial and social contacts between the northern and southern colonies. The presence of skilled black artisans in Atlantic port cities facilitated the flow of information across imperial boundaries. This specific victory underscored the porous nature of colonial legal systems regarding the status of mobile maritime workers.
