1761–1837: Dominica emerged as a significant center for British slaving activity after its conquest from France in 1761, reaching high points of arrivals in 1771 and 1785. Liverpool-based merchants dominated this market, providing three out of every four captives who disembarked on the island. The Bight of Biafra served as the primary regional source, accounting for three-fifths of all captives taken on board in Africa for this destination. Beyond its own plantation needs, Dominica functioned as a critical re-export hub that supplied forced labor to various other Caribbean colonies.
