1736: Shore attack on the boats of the Prince of Orange, bound for York River (voyage 16838)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at York River in 1736, the Prince of Orange had its boats attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Calabar.

The record gives the numbers as: 306 people were embarked; 251 were landed.

Captain: Bird, Japhet. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
