1736: Insurrection aboard the Stannage, bound for Upper James River (voyage 92340)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Upper James River in 1736, the people aboard the Stannage rose against the crew. They had been taken at Gambia.

The record gives the numbers as: 211 people were embarked; 180 were landed.

Captain: Hill, Thomas. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
