1722: Insurrection aboard the Marie Galère (voyage 33131)

African

On a slaving voyage in 1722, the people aboard the Marie Galère rose against the crew. They had been taken at Benin.

The record gives the numbers as: 175 people were embarked; 145 were landed; 30 died on the crossing.

Captain: La Ville Gégu, Durand de. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured by slaves: ship did not reach the Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
