1722: Insurrection aboard the Ferrers (a) Farres, bound for Kingston (voyage 75484)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Kingston in 1722, the people aboard the Ferrers (a) Farres rose against the crew. They had been taken at Cape Coast Castle.

The record gives the numbers as: 316 people were embarked; 273 were landed.

Captain: Messervy, Francis (a) Messerve. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “shipwrecked or destroyed, after disembarkation.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
