1629: A Spanish armament expelled a body of French and English planters from the island of St. Christopher with circumstances of outrageous barbarity. These exiles fled in open boats and possessed themselves of the small unoccupied island of Tortuga, eventually forming the daring band of adventurers known as the Buccaneers.
