1627: A contemporary description of a slave ship highlighted the horrific and disgusting conditions endured by captives, who were often crowded together under the deck in chains. The account detailed how men were linked by the neck and feet, imprisoned in such a way that they were denied sight of the sun or moon for the duration of the voyage. The stench and lack of ventilation within the holds were so extreme that even the Spanish crew members feared entering the hatches. Captives were provided minimal nutrition, typically consisting of a single daily bowl of uncooked corn flour or millet and a small amount of water.
