1600–1749: Economic statistics cited in a memoir on commerce illustrated the rapid growth of England’s national wealth over a century and a half. In 1600, the country’s total value in money, ships, houses, and land was estimated at 216 million pounds sterling. By 1660, this figure had more than doubled, and by 1688, it had nearly tripled. By 1749, the total wealth of the British state reached 1,000 million pounds sterling, representing a progression of roughly one to five since the beginning of the seventeenth century.
